The Heaven over Berlin is a loose translation of the title of Wim Wenders film Der Himmel über Berlin, one of the key references for this masters dissertation. In both film and literature, the sky is an important vantage point for the observation of Berlin’s changing cityscape, and intriguingly the only geographical space that both sides of the divided city shared.

The research uncovered a series of motifs in the source material such as the enchanted forest, the mysterious stranger and the magic castle, all of which are related to the traditional German Märchen or fairy story, and act as signposts to an exploration of Berlin’s architectural space.
